Benign Prostate Enlargement

Thank you for visiting our web site.

Prostate enlargement, otherwise known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (or BPH) is an abnormal enlargement of the prostate gland, causing variable degrees of bladder outlet obstruction. BPH is believed to affect 50% of men over the age of 50 years. BPH increases with advanced age and is believed to affect 80% of men over the age of 80 years.

The prostate gland is a walnut shaped gland located around the outlet of the bladder called the urethra. The prostate gland produces a slightly acidic fluid that contains acid phosphatase, citric acid and proteolytic enzymes. Prostatic fluid mixes with sperm produced in the male genitalia to produce semen.

The rate of prostatic fluid production increases with sexual activity. With increased age and under hormonal stimulation, the prostate gland enlarges. Because of its position around the bladder, the enlarged prostate quickly interferes with the normal passage of urine. Symptoms of BPH include increased frequency of urination, urination at night, incomplete bladder emptying, inability to void, overflow incontinence and terminal dribbling.

Prostatitis

Prostatitis is the term used to describe acute or chronic inflammation of the prostate gland. The most common cause of prostatitis is bacterial infection. Symptoms include burning, increased frequency and urgency of urination, abdominal pain, rectal pain, scrotal pain, fever and nightsweats.

The standard medical treatment focuses on the use of antibiotics to eradicate the infection. However, prostatitis can become a chronic irritating problem. With advancing age the blood flow to the prostate gland decreases, thereby limiting the delivery of immune cells and antibiotics.

Saw Palmetto

Has been used to treat colds, bronchitis, asthma, irritated mucosal membranes, bladder infection and prostate problems in men. Extracts of Saw Palmetto have been successfully used to treat benign enlargement of the prostate gland. A purified Saw palmetto extract containing 25 to 95% fatty acid content has been successfully used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH for short. The net result is a decrease in prostate gland size.

A study group treated with Saw palmetto extract showed a significant improvement in symptoms of BPH. Saw palmetto extract was well tolerated and no side effects were reported. Saw palmetto extract was as effective as Proscar in alleviating the symptoms associated with prostate enlargement and was much less toxic than the conventional drug. A divided dose of 150 milligrams of the standardized extract of Saw palmetto is recommended three times per day.
