All fish oil capsules are not equal
‘Til now, fish oil capsules were all pretty much the same. Natural
Factors, has introduced a salmon oil derived from wild Alaskan salmon.
There has never been a pure salmon oil - until now. Most ‘salmon oil’
capsules include more than just salmon. To achieve high ratios of EPA to
DHA commercially available salmon oil capsules are pumped with other fish
oils. In the wild, salmon swimming in cold Atlantic or Pacific waters
contain only 7 to 8 percent EPA and DHA. Natural Factors Wild Alaska
Salmon Oil capsules are pure salmon oil, with the fatty acid ratio found
in free-swimming salmon.
Fresh, wild salmon - not farmed
Most of the commercially available fish oil comes from farmed salmon.
To make them grow as well as their wild cousins and to prevent disease in
their crowded quarters, farmed salmon are given hormones and antibiotics.
Their convenient, pelleted food is made from animal and fish by-products
instead of live plankton, krill and algae that wild fish dine on. This
affects the quality of those essential Omega-3 fatty acids we need for
health. Referring to farmed salmon, Udo Erasmus says: "Since their fat
content depends on what they eat, their fat content is different from that
of free-swimming ocean or fresh-water fish." (Udo Erasmus. Fats that
Heal: Fats that Kill. Alive Books. 1993.) Wild fish, swimming in the
deep, pristine Alaskan waters will contain high quality Omega-3 fatty
acids, with no antibiotic or hormone residues.
Sustainable fishing
Environmentally-conscious consumers worry that fish oil taken from wild
salmon could further deplete existing stocks. Natural Factors Wild Alaska
Salmon Oil comes from the fish heads of already harvested fish. By taking
advantage of what is readily available, the whole salmon is used and
nothing is wasted.
The Chinese Medicine connection
The oil is taken only from the head of the salmon, a clear advantage
for advocates of the ancient art of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In
Chinese medicine the fish head is very valuable and health-promoting. Soup
made from fish heads is often taken to combat headaches and to promote
brain function.
Superior benefits of fish oils
"One reason you may be aging faster than need be: You don’t eat enough
seafood. Thus, your cells are left deficient in fish oil. Without enough
of this unique pharmacological fat, your cells go bonkers and issue all
kinds of inappropriate chemical messages that wreck your joints, clog your
arteries, produce pain and spur cancer growth... No question, fish eaters
are more apt to escape aging diseases, such as heart disease, cancer,
arthritis, diabetes, psoriasis and bronchitis, studies consistently show."
(Jean Carper. Stop Aging Now: the ultimate plan for staying young &
reversing the aging process. Harper Collins. 1995.)
Fish oils are loaded with Omega-3 fatty acids. Studies showing the
health benefits of fish and fish oil now number into the thousands.
Although encouraging individuals to get their fish oils from actually
eating fish, Dr. Weil has recently recommended only one product as an
alternative - Natural Factors Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil. In western medicine
thousands of studies show the benefits of Omega-3 fatty acids found in
fish oil for the heart and circulatory system. Seventeen clinical trials
involving fish oil and blood pressure were evaluated by researchers at
Johns Hopkins Medical School. They found that consuming 3 grams of fish
oil a day can significantly reduce blood pressure. Although fish oil had
no effect on people with normal blood pressure, it had significant effect
on those who were hypertensive. There is intriguing evidence that the
fatty acids found in fish oil may benefit rheumatoid arthritis. Albany
Medical College, New York, studied 33 patients who suffered from swollen
joints, fatigue, and morning stiffness. After fourteen weeks of fish oil
supplementation the joint tenderness eased and they had less fatigue. The
fatty acids found in fish oil are being studied in connection with a
variety of disorders such as eczema, psoriasis, and Raynaud’s
phenomenon.
