PROUD TO BE PART OF YOUR COMMUNITY FOR 35 YEARS!
In 1979, myself, Ann McLeod and Darlene Repka Smith decided that we wanted to own a business together… both teachers wanting to challenge ourselves we looked at everything from car washes to tee shirt factories. In the end a recently opened and for sale Health Food store in The Prairie Mall intrigued us, even though we didn’t know what Aloe Vera or Wheat Germ were.
The industry was in the pioneer stage and we were game to be pioneers. I was immediately enthralled with the industry — everything made sense and it was exciting. Many of our
customers were just becoming involved in the industry and it was fun to learn together. It was exciting to be so involved in a new industry. Even though there was an existing health food store in Grande Prairie (Health Food Supplies on Main Street - owned and operated by Judy Hamilton), the industry was still very new and considered very alternative. We were faced with real opposition from the drug stores, registered dieticians, and by the Federal Health Protection Agency. In those early years we experienced surprise visits by federal staff who came in aggressively, confiscated products and shredded literature on the premises. It felt like a violation of personal freedom and rights.
In spite of opposition the industry has always continued to thrive and grow. It appears that truth wins out. Our customers have always been well read and have always wanted the products that they feel will optimize their health. It is always reassuring to see customers (and now their children) shopping in our store 35 years later.
Many products have not changed. Aloe Vera, essential oils and apple cider vinegar are still staples in our store, but each year new or improved products and supplements become available. We are no longer a fringe industry. New waves of healing continue and they now lead the way. Our community continues to increase the options that
xist within the Alternative Health spectrum. All these modalities provide the opportunity for our community to evolve
and achieve their greatest level of health.
What has not changed is the belief by those people in the Alternative Health industry that people should have access to products and services they feel will optimize their health that choices regarding our health care are as personal as our choices around spirituality and that positive thinking can always make a difference.
In the early 90’s we laughingly coined the phrase: “They used to call us Health Nuts……….. Now they just call us!” It seems to be as true today as it was then.
We want to genuinely extend our gratitude to our community for the last 35 years. The loyalty that exists for a locally owned business does not go unnoticed or unappreciated. Thank you.

Fair trade coffee is produced without pesticides or herbicides. It may or may not be labelled as sustainable, a marketing term that doesn’t have a concrete definition. Generally, it means that coffee has been produced in a way that’s friendly to people and the planet. A certified organic label ensures that a coffee brand was truly sustainably produced.
